While we all like to think we are not affected by marketing, imagery and pretty pictures; the opposite is true in almost all instances. This is just as true regards web page design, as it is the design of our clothes. You can select to have your image used in a single shot, which will be modified to take up the entire page. Alternatively, you can tile the image. Which option you choose will be based on your own judgment of course, though it should also be driven by picture quality.

The background is not all about the main graphic that sits behind the text of course; it is just as important to work on the color scheme, and tailor the layout and coloring of your text. Look at combinations that compliment; rather than draw the eye unnecessarily.
